Bugün size neden podolog olmaya karar verdiğimi tüm berraklığı ile açıklamak istiyorum. Çünkü görüyorum ki, halen daha programı okumak için karamsarlık yaşayan adaylar var.
Hiç bahsetmiş miydim, bilmiyorum. Lisede "Hemşirelik" bölümünü bitirmiştim; yani üniversitede öğrenciyken gece nöbetlerinde sadece kısa süreliğine hemşirelik yaptım. Sonraki tüm mesleki sürecim podolog olarak devam etti.
Podoloji mesleğini üniversite tercihlerine kadar bilmiyordum. Hatta tercih zamanında bile tam olarak ne olduğuyla ilgili hiçbir fikrim yoktu. Lisedeki bir hocamın önerisiyle tercih listemde yer verdim. Ama o dönemde hocamın bu önerisini çok fazla ciddiye almamıştım. Hedefimde hep Anestezi Teknikerliği vardı. Aslında ergenliğin ve çocukluğun da etkisiyle o zamanların havalı mesleklerindendi AT'lik.
Üniversite için 26 tane tercih hakkı bulunuyordu ve ben tercih listemin 16 yada 14 tanesini doldurabilmiştim. Listemin tamamı Anestezi programı, son sırasında ise Podoloji bulunuyordu. Yani bir bakıma Podoloji'yi hiç önemsememiştim😅.
Bir gün en yakın arkadaşımla yan yana geldik ve tercih sürecinin devam ettiği zamanlarda annemlerin evinde (şuan evli olduğum için annemlerin evi oldu 😅) -hata hangi odada olduğumuzu bile hatırlıyorum-, büyük oturma odasında, o eski masanın üstünde bilgisayardan tercihlerimizi açmıştık. Büşra, kendisine Ege'nin geleceğini düşünüyordu, ben de bana da aynı bölgeden çıkmasını temenni ediyordum. Biz her ne kadar tahminler yürütsek de korktuğumuz başımıza gelmişti. O istemediği tercih olan Marmara Üniversitesi'ne (Ekonomi Programı), bense Kocaeli Üniversitesi'ne (Podoloji Programı) hak kazanmıştım 😂. Bu durumla bir süre üzüntü yaşamış olsak da hayat her zaman önümüze farklı kapıların açılabileceği bir ömür biçiyor bizlere. Bu inancımız bize katettiğimiz yolda hiç beklemediğimiz tecrübeleri yaşamamıza vesile oldu. O yüksek lisansını yeni tamamladı, bense hayalini bile kurmadığım bakım merkezimi açtım. Bkz: Lewis💕
Evlenmeyi hiç düşünmeyen ben, bu bölüm sayesinde hayat arkadaşımı buldum. Kendisi şimdilerde eşim olarak mesleğini icra etmekte 🤭.
Peki ya Podoloji'yi nasıl kabullendim?
Lisede 4'üncü sınıf Hemşirelik stajımı özel bir hastanede yapmıştım. Hastanede görev aldığımız birim tırnak çekimi, pansuman gibi müdahalelerin ağırlıkta olduğu bir tempoya sahipti. Bu tarz işlemlere katılır, doktorları asiste ederdim. Yapılan girişimler her ne kadar tedavi amacıyla olsa da ağrılı ve zor süreçleri beraberinde getiren cinstendi. Vakalar sadece bunlarla da kısıtlı değildi. Günümüzde halen daha vakaları bulunan diyabetik ayak yaralarına staj döneminde de çok denk geldim ve üzülülerek söyleyebilirim ki yapılan müdahaleler yaraların sargılarını değiştirmekten öteye geçmiyordu. Çünkü bu nekrotik dokuların çözüme ulaşmasının güç olduğunu birçok sağlık çalışanı kabullenmişti. Bu elbette doğru bir yaklaşım değil. Ne olursa olsun sağlık kavramı mucizelere ev sahipliği yapabilen çok geniş bir konu. Üstelik bu denli sorun yaşayan bireyler yaşadıkları hastalıkla ilgili yeterli bilgiye bile sahip değillerdi. Tam da bunları yaşayıp görmüşken ortadaki bir çok sorunun cavabının Podoloji'de olduğunu fark etmeye başladım.
Hemşirelik temelli olmanın da artısıyla Podoloji eğitiminde bambaşka yaklaşımların olduğunu görmeye başladım. Hiç görmediğim, duymadığım uygulamaların sadece o mesleğe özgü olması. Birçok ayak sorununun aslında ağrı cerrahi girişimlere maruz bırakılmadan da çözülebileceğini görmek... Hepsini düşündükçe sağlık sisteminin çok net bir şekilde bir açığının olduğunu anlamamı kısa sürede sağladı. Bölümü özveriyle okudum, staj ve uygulama derslerimi titizle gözlemledim ve nihayetinde bir podolog oldum.
Şu anda okul zamanlarımda planlamış olduğum bakım merkezinin, Lewis Ayak Bakımı'nın sahibi olarak kalan hayatımı yaşamaya devam ediyorum. Belki bu iş yerini açma serüveni başka bir yazının konusu olabilir; çünkü o da bam başka bir serüvene sahip.
Eğer Podoloji'yle ilgili internet araştırmaları yaparken bu yazımıza denk geldiyseniz size şunu söyleyebilirim: "Mezun olduğunuz yılın bir önemi yok. Mesleğinizle attığınız her adım Podoloji'ye bir iz bırakıyor. İşini en etik şekilde sunmaktan hiçbir zaman vaz geçmeyin. Hedefiniz her zaman bu ülkeye bir şey kazandırmak olmalı. Parası olanların değil, iz bırakanların hatırlanacağına inanıyorum."

Today I would like to explain to you with all clarity why I decided to become a podologist, because I see that there are still candidates who are still pessimistic about studying the programme.
I don't know if I've ever mentioned it. I graduated from high school with a degree in "Nursing", so when I was a student at university, I only worked as a nurse for a short time on night shifts. After that, I continued my entire professional career as a podologist.
I did not know the podology profession until university preferences. Even at the time of preference, I had no idea exactly what it was. I included it in my preference list with the suggestion of a teacher in high school. But at that time, I did not take this suggestion of my teacher too seriously. I always had Anesthesia Technician in my target. In fact, with the effect of adolescence and childhood, AT was one of the cool professions of those times.
There were 26 preferences for the university and I was able to fill 16 or 14 of my preference list. All of my list was the Anaesthesia programme and Podology was in the last row. So in a way I never cared about Podology😅.
One day, my best friend and I came side by side and when the preference process was going on, we opened our preferences from the computer on that old table in the big living room at my parents' house (it became my parents' house because I am married now 😅) -I even remember which room we were in- in the big living room. Büşra thought that she would come to the Aegean, and I was hoping that I would come from the same region. No matter how much we made predictions, what we feared had happened to us. She was entitled to Marmara University (Economics Programme), which was the choice she did not want, and I was entitled to Kocaeli University (Podology Programme) 😂. Although we have experienced sadness for a while with this situation, life always gives us a life in which different doors can open in front of us. This belief of ours has led us to have unexpected experiences on the road we have travelled. She just completed her master's degree, and I opened my care centre that I never even dreamed of. I, who never thought of getting married, found my life partner thanks to this section. He is now practising his profession as my husband 🤭.
And how did I accept Podology?
In high school, I did my 4th year nursing internship in a private hospital. The unit we worked in the hospital had a tempo where interventions such as nail extraction and dressing were predominant. I would participate in such procedures and assist the doctors. Although the interventions were for treatment purposes, they were painful and difficult processes. The cases were not limited to these. I came across a lot of diabetic foot wounds, of which there are still cases today, during the internship period, and I regret to say that the interventions made did not go beyond changing the dressings of the wounds. Because many health workers accepted that these necrotic tissues were difficult to resolve. This is of course not the right approach. In any case, the concept of health is a very broad subject that can host miracles. Moreover, individuals experiencing such problems did not even have enough information about the disease they were experiencing. Just when I was experiencing and seeing these, I started to realise that the answer to many problems in the middle was in Podology.
With the advantage of being nursing-based, I started to see that there are completely different approaches in Podology education. Practices that I have never seen or heard of are unique to that profession. Seeing that many foot problems can actually be solved without being exposed to pain surgical interventions... As I thought about all of them, it made me realise that the health system had a very clear deficit in a short time. I studied the department devotedly, meticulously observed my internship and practice courses and eventually became a podologist.
Currently, I continue to live the rest of my life as the owner of the care centre, Lewis Foot Care, which I planned during my school days. Maybe the adventure of opening this business can be the subject of another article; because it has a completely different adventure.
If you have come across this article while doing internet research on Podology, I can tell you the following: "The year you graduated does not matter. Every step you take with your profession leaves a mark on Podology. Never give up on presenting your work in the most ethical way. Your goal should always be to bring something to this country. I believe that those who leave a mark will be remembered, not those who have money."
